Currently Inspired By: Kiki Smith

I first was introduced to Kiki’s works in my Women Artists course and was immediately captivated by her disturbing sculptures and her affinity for the taboo qualities of the human body. Her early sculptural work depicted haunting forms trailing feces and urine, and lifeless husks dripping milk and semen. Kiki blurs that line between grotesque and beautiful, and forces the viewer to confront the seemingly ugly characteristics of the human body. I discovered her work around the same time I started developing a fixation with decomposition, and she inspired a bit of that macabre aesthetic I’ve incorporated into my own works.

If her artworks themselves aren’t strangely brilliant enough, she even has her own signature perfume inspired by “cat pee and plant sex.” <3
